If your bedroom is in need of therapy, a good place to start is with your curtains. Perhaps your bedroom is looking a bit dull and tired and you fancy injecting some life into it.
Get Inspiration From The Experts
A good place to start is by looking at curtains on-line, in catalogs and on shop displays for some fresh ideas. You can then use these ideas and adapt them to suit not only your bedroom and your style, but your budget as well.
The Right Size Curtains
If you decide to change what you already have, get hold of a tape measure before you buy a thing. You need to decide how far down you want the curtains to drop and you will need to know the exact measurement of the window. Speak to the shop assistants if you need advice as choosing the right size curtain is not always straight forward.
Choosing The Right Color
If you want your curtains to match your existing bed linen, cushions, etc, get a swatch of color to take with you when you go shopping; return to the shop where you bought them - many of the bigger shops make curtains to match bed linen.
Choose A Theme
Choose a theme which is personal to you. Perhaps you want your curtains to look smart and official, like a hotel room, or maybe you want a sassy or sexy feel with velvet or silk.
Voile Curtains
Voile curtains are sheer and let the light in. They come in many colors and designs so you can be really creative in choosing and arranging them.
Drapes And Swags
A good way to use curtains to make a statement is by using drapes or swags to frame your window. You can use the curtain pole over the top of the window to drape lengths of rich fabric around, creating a luxurious effect, or you could use lengths of lighter fabric or voile for a fresh, dreamy effect.
Make Your Own Curtains
You don’t have to be a master seamstress to create a unique and special effect as you can buy panels already sewn to size, or you could hem some fabric quite easily. Tab-tops, valances and so on will of course be much more difficult.
Pelmets And Valances
A valance or pelmet is the panel at the top of the window and is used to hide the curtain pole. What you see is the curtain hanging from behind it. A valance or pelmet can make a window look swanky and lavish as they can be decorated with any manner of tassels or creative designs including swirls and embellishments.
Fixed Tie-Backs
Be creative with hold backs and tie backs. You can buy hold backs and tie backs that are fastened to the wall which allow you to arrange and drape the curtain to frame the window and wall, or you could make your own from hooks or belts.
Be Creative
You could make your own ties for your curtains from cords, ribbons, rope, strips of fabric and so on, and then decorate them with plastic jewels, old earrings or jewelry, stars, butterflies, sea-shells, tassels, bows, beads, toy teddy-bears anything you like!
