Horn turned into a necklace creating wearable art

Last August I went on one of the most amazing trips ever. I spent a few days after a visit in Uganda in the Masai Mara wildlife reserve in Kenya. I had always dreamed of going on safari before, but didn't know that it would be something that I would ever be able to do. You can read more about my experience on safari here and here.

While we were at one of the local safari camps, I acquired an Impala horn. It was found in the dried scat of an animal and looks to be that of a small Impala that was a yummy dinner for one of the bigger animals in the Mara. However, it's pretty darn small, so I'm now second guessing if it's an Impala or a Topi.  Whatevs, it doesn't really matter. It's awesome.

I brought it home, not sure what I would do with it, but just this past weekend, I decided to try making a necklace out of it and the end result is fantastic! I love it! And I love that it reminds me of a such a special place in this world.

A collection of the best stackable anniversary bands

My husband and I recently celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary. We spent some time celebrating in Cancun and we had our best time!

I am still a girl, and jewelry is never far from my mind.  I like diamonds and sparkly things, what can I say! I am loving the new stackable ring trend and think that it's a fabulous idea if you are looking for some sparkly way to remember your next wedding anniversary by.

I've rounded up a few of my favorites from Anjolee. Maybe you will find a favorite that you love too!

easy leather bead bracelet

Before Christmas, I had the chance to shop House of Gems, an on-line wholesale bead and jewelry making supply shop.  I was like a kid in a candy shop!  Expect to see more projects soon, but for now, these leather bead bracelets are the first thing I tackled.

I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but when I do, I like it to be small and subtle. Sometimes small and subtle is hard to find in the stores, so after hunting, I decided to make my own.

Accessorize plus a giveaway

For years when my kids were little, I wore nothing but my diamond stud earrings that my husband got me as an anniversary present.
Babies would be pulling on my earrings, and quite honestly, I didn't have enough time to hem and haw over what accessories to wear when I barely had enough time to shower!

My kids are older now, and it's been hard to break out of the rut of not making time to accessorize.
I love earrings and bracelets and necklaces, I just don't have a lot of them.

Recently, JTV gave me the opportunity to select a piece of jewelry that I loved.
Any piece.
It was hard to pick because there were so many great pieces.

I loved this cabochon cuff bracelet.
Partly because it's sapphire blue like my birthstone.
I was also a big fan of this link bracelet.
Since I'm breaking into this accessory wearing thing, I gravitate to things that are versatile
and this looks like you could wear with with so many things.
I'm always looking for simple yet classy earrings.
That color!

Talk about making a statement with this orange jasper ring.

And while we are talking statements,
this bib necklace could take a little black dress up a notch.

If you love vintage like me, you will love the Titanic collection.
Holy cow!  I think I want one of everything.

While there were so many things that enticed me, I finally settled on these 10k yellow gold chandelier earrings.

I love the sweet simplicity of them and in my wardrobe versatility is key, and they hit the mark!

JTV was nice enough to not only give me a pair of 10K yellow gold Filigree Chandelier earrings, but they sent me a pair that I could share as well!
I know you will love them as much as I do!

Clip on earrings made into a statement necklace

My favorite accessory this spring by far has got to be the statement necklace!
I just can't get enough!

Recently, I was offered the challenge by emitations
to incorporate clip on earrings into a creative craft campaign.
Not that clip on earrings need to be changed into anything,
especially the pairs by emitations.
They are gorgeous!

But, it was a challenge, and I'm always up for a challenge.
I received two pairs of the Bijou's Rose gold clusters to work with.
Every order comes packaged in the most beautiful way and would make the perfect gift...
but I digress...back to the challenge!

I found a few rose gold supplies in my Hobby Lobby jewelry aisle.
I didn't end up using the large jump rings, but I wanted to show you the chain that I bought.

I started by removing the back of the clip on earring.
I have fancy jewelry tools, though I'm sure you could get by without.

Once the back was removed, I found the center of my chain and eye balled a placement of where I would want my now clip on free clip on earrings to be on my necklace.
With my pliers I removed the larger of the two rings on the chain where I wanted my cluster to go.

I straightened out my ring as much as possible and fed it through the two holes that are part of the cluster where the clip on used to attach to.

I used my pliers to round out my jump ring, though not closing it all the way.
I threaded it through the smaller rings and placed my newly adorned cluster where my plain jump ring was before.
I closed the jump ring all the way once it was in place.

I repeated the process with all four of my clusters to make my statement necklace.
I love it!

Making a statement!

If you were given the challenge, what would you have created?

Easy zipper bracelet tutorial

I'm a bit of a craft supply hoarder.
I see supplies at garage sales and have a hard time passing them up,
however, sometimes those supplies sit for years before I do anything with them.
I finally figured out what to do with the zippers that I have been holding on to for at least two years and I actually love the end result!
I made those zippers into zipper bracelets!

This is my stash of zippers.
Most of them are vintage.
I bought them in bulk for less than ten cents a piece.

These 7 inch jean zippers ended up being my favorite kind of zipper to use.
I love how thick the zipper was and the brass was pretty awesome too.

Besides the zippers,
here are the supplies that you will need.
It wouldn't hurt to have some needle and round nose pliers.

Start by cutting the ends off of your zipper.

Next cut as close as you can to the zipper and cut off the side material.

Once that is done, I seal my fabric seams over a candle.
Be careful!
Your zipper will be hot!

Use a cupchain to secure the end of your zipper.
You can also use a dot of hot glue to hold the end in place in your cupchain.

Slide on a jump ring, your charm and your clasp.

Close your jump ring with your pliers.

Your clasp can hook to the hole in your zipper end.
Pretty fancy right?!

You can layer your bracelets for even more awesomeness!

Because I got such a great deal on my zippers,
these bracelets cost me next to nothing to make.

What is your favorite craft supply that you hoard?

Using bulk chain to make a necklace. A tutorial on how I made a cancer mom necklace

This weekend is Paula's Pillowcase Project weekend.
One Saturday a year for the past six years, I have joined Paula in sewing pillowcases for kids at Seattle Children's hospital that have been diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing treatment.

Last year I had a sew along so that you could join me in helping provide a soft homemade pillowcase for kids that are spending their days and nights away from home laying on oftentimes scratchy hospital pillows with their cute bald heads.
If you are interested in sewing along, it isn't too late!
Check this post for up to date information.

This year, Paula asked if I would be willing to craft something
for the moms of kids with cancer that come during the event.

Something that they could wear {that wasn't overly obnoxious}
but that would distinguish them as a mom of a kid with cancer.

There are usually about a dozen moms that come to volunteer their time making pillowcases for other kids, usually because they were touched by the pillowcase their child received when they were first admitted.
Sewing along side kids with cancer or working with kids in remission and talking with moms whose kids are in the fight for their lives is one of my favorite parts of the event.

So of course, I didn't hesitate to jump on board and help.
I immediately thought necklace.
Like a pink ribbon is the color for breast cancer, gold is the color for childhood cancer.
I wanted something the moms could wear again and also something I could easily make multiples of.
This is what I came up with.

I am not a jewelry maker.
In fact, walking down the jewelry aisle at the craft store makes me a little nervous.
It seems foreign to me.
I didn't know what jump rings were or how you can cut chain to make a necklace,
but I took a little crash course and now I want to share with you what I learned.

While I made a childhood cancer necklace, the same rules apply to any necklace you would want to make with a charm pendant or two.

You will need:
charms {I used these gold ribbons}
jump rings and clasps {I got mine in a package together}
 bulk chain {I used 72"}
jewelry making tools {round nose, flat nose and cutting pliers are a must!}

I honestly had no idea you could make your own necklace using chain.
I spent far longer than I would like to admit wandering up and down the jewelry aisle at not one but three different craft stores looking for pre-made necklace chains.

Come to find out, you can make it.
Who knew?
If you knew, please don't laugh at me or I will punch you in the face.

You can use this image as a guide for cutting the perfect length.

I cut my chain with my cutting pliers to 18".

Next, I used a jump ring to add a loop on to my bead charms.
My gold ribbon charms already had a jump ring.

You simply use your flat nose pliers to open up your jump ring, then hold it in place.
Slip your charm through the opening in your jump ring and
use your round nose pliers to help close your jump ring.

Before you put your clasps on, slip your charms on your chain.
It's easier and will save you time, trust me!

On one end of your chain put your jump ring using the same method that you did for your charm.

On the other end of your chain you will open up the small circle jump ring that is attached to your clasp and slide the end of your chain on.
Use your round pliers to close up your jump ring.

There you have it, a homemade necklace chain!
Notice how I didn't put my charms on it yet.
Yep, this is where I learned that it was easier to do that first before putting my clasp ends on.

Here is the finished necklace.
I really like how it turned out and think that the moms will like it too!

I'm thinking next time I walk down the jewelry making aisle I will be a little less nervous.
I hope you will be too!

Cloth measuring tape bracelet tutorial

At the beginning of the summer I passed up this ah-mazing
vintage cloth measuring tape at a garage sale.
The lady was only selling it as part of a notions set and I didn't want to pay $10 for it.

Tape

Since I passed it up the measuring tape, I have regretted it for months!
I have wanted to make a cloth measuring tape bracelet for over a year, so I was looking for a vintage one.
Ugh, can't believe I passed it up!

I want to show you how I made this measuring tape bracelet.

When I saw this ruler ribbon at Hobby Lobby, I thought it was the next best thing to the vintage one.
I picked up cupchain ends, toggle clasps and {not shown} jump rings.

I started by cutting a piece of the ribbon just slightly smaller than my wrist.

I folded the ends to a point

and placed the cupchain end on it securing it in place with the prongs.

I did this on both ends finishing off the bracelet.

I added the jump ring to the end of the cupchain and then put the toggle on.
Easy as pie!

It's not the vintage measuring tape bracelet that I was drooling over,
but I think it's a great substitute!
